Thrive: New Years

With a large move, like the one we made from Buffalo to Chapel HIll, comes Western NY cultural withdrawal. We’ve craved kaiser rolls and Frank’s hot sauce, searched for hockey fans and had the urge to pretend an island was a round about, but just now, as we are in Buffalo for the Holidays, do we feel the need to be heavily dosed with techno and DnB.

Good friend Epistemic Miscreant turned us on to Datahata and a few other locals who hit the techno funk scene hard in the Bull City. But go to Durham? At night? Aside from the constant warnings to steer clear of the Bull City with all its gang wars and destitute husbands, Matt and I assumed that the entire RTP area was given to experimental rock and indie. But where we were missing Buffalo’s OPM Lounge, Club 9 may soon take it’s place.

Those lucky enough to be spending New Years Eve with us, and the lineup of talented DJs, will be entranced by Dj Slipstream’s expertly executed mix of atmospheric DnB fused with horns, piano breaks and twisted jungle. Slipstream is traditional in that he eases the crowd into his sets. His downloadable tracks begin with atmospheric sounds before leaping into jazz like grooves in combination with drifting vocals and persistent percussion. He has found his knitch somewhere between Grooverider and LTJ Bukem and likewise, has an ear for correct harmony and flawless timing.

Other DJs in the lineup include Hotwax Harley, Marshall Jones, Nogui and Chris Corsello. Shows at 10 PM with a champagne toast.
