Nature Inspired
Sunny Sunday afternoons (in November!) weren’t made for starring at the computer. Our last post was dedicated to the art of finding great places to loiter. We’d like to follow up and share exactly how we spend our time at one of these great local hideaways.
I took a bike ride down to University Lake where fellow artists sketched the seasonal foliage, rowers took to the glassy water and couples cuddled in the shade of the enormous trees that tower over weathered picnic tables. Having grown up in the country, I tend to need my elbow room to work productively. My favorite thing about this spot is the inspiration it poses for my jewelry. I am especially fond of found organic objects and the way they follow the curves and movement of the human body in ways that faceted gems and cast silver cannot.
“Acorned’
I made this pair last month when I feeling particularly fall-like. The smokey quartz has just the slightest brown twinge when juxtaposed with silver and green.
‘Eco Earred’
In New York, the pine needles are short and sharp. These long soft danglers made for the perfect pair of dusters.
In an effort to buck my girlish nature and stop buying ready-to-wear, I am teaching myself to sew. Carrboro is full of great sewing classes, so after November / December travels, I’ll be taking a class or two. This is a very poor sketch of a dress that I think would be great for the warmish Holidays here. Co-Owner and resident Illustrator, Matt should be able to coach me on proportions for future planning.
I must have been too busy snapping photos of the scenic escape because I left without a collection of objects.
