DIY Wool Mittens
I was going to give away my secret recipe for Honey Cajun Turkey Rub, but due to the inexplicably cold weather here in the South, I was inspired to make mittens instead.
Tools and Materials:
Paper
Marker
Scissors
Old Wool Sweater (support your local PTA or Salvo!)
Pins
Sewing machine
Thread (neon is easy to see)

Homemade TV Stand
Here at 12 Grain, we are very hands on folks. We are also big fans of recycling and reuse to live within our means. A trait inherited from my father, I have become a trash “browser” or collector of fine abandoned goods. This week I’ve decided to improve my living room with a custom TV stand made from some found objects.

Great Reads
I swing both ways - the best stories are either those spun from redundancy or extreme normalcy, or those so surreal, they leave me aware of this finite world. Chuck Klosterman’s Downtown Owl is nothing but the ordinary tale of a few residents in a small town. It’s his last minute climax and ability to slip in slight detail that creates a great novel. The following is a list of short shorts and novels that may or may not inspire.

Recycled Paper Tray
Make from scratch, start with your own ideas, see them through, for better or worse.
On a tip from the employees at Fitch Lumber & Hardware, I took an afternoon drive to Storybrook Farms to visit the metal-smith Artisans who live, work, and breathe wrought iron. The farm is virtually unscathed by the current state of economy; mammoth sheets of metal lean against houses, tractors and farm equipment gleam in the dun and the men cheerfully greet me before I shut my car door. One of the men warns me, “if it lands in the scrap bin, it must truly be scrap for us not to use it.” I am allowed to help myself to their discards, all for free! I dive in and recover treasures: a decaying, peeling sconce, a silver owl hood ornament, nails and screws, and a sort of wiry wheel.

Nature Inspired
Sunny Sunday afternoons (in November!) weren’t made for starring at the computer. Our last post was dedicated to the art of finding great places to loiter. We’d like to follow up and share exactly how we spend our time at one of these great local hideaways.

Looking for Flashers
We are looking for some designers, animators or anyone who might be interested in talking about and learning about Flash and design...and stuff. On Tuesday, Matt spoke at the Raleigh Adobe Users Group and was inspired to start his own class. He has spoken briefly with Brian at the Carrboro Creative Coworking space about holding some formal meetings for those not located in Raleigh. If this sounds fun for you, let us know. Thanks!

Business Model For The New Economy
12 Grain will be using the business expertise of aberdium consulting to help achieve only the best results, the ones you deserve.
Most have a business with a vision. Aberdium consulting started with and continues to be a vision with a business. What does that mean? It means that the founders wanted a few simple things in life - a good, fair income; to be able support their local community; to put friends and family first, and be great stewards of the only planet we’ve got. This was the beginning of something beautiful, different, and effective. This was the beginning of the aberdium manifesto - the ethical compass for all decisions both internally and externally. Sights were then set on creating a new model for business. The founders of aberdium built a framework for building companies through real-world marketing plans and specific goals for growth. Any company that offers 24/7 service and 100% guarantee must be crazy or insanely confident. Be warned - They don’t work with just any client, but then again, maybe your not just any client.
